- Rhodiola rosea is a perennial plant found in
cool temperate and sub-arctic areas of the northern hemisphere. It is
commonly referred to as golden root, arctic root or rose root
- Rhodiola rosea has been categorized as an
adaptogen due to its observed ability to increase resistance to a variety of
chemical, biological,and physical stressors
- Rhodiola species contain a range of
antioxidant compounds, including p-tyrosol, organic acids (gallic acid,
caffeic acid, and chlorogenic acid), and flavonoids (catechins and
proanthocyanidins)
- Total costs of production for Rhodiola rosea
include seedlings, land preparation, planting, weeding, fertilizer,
harvesting, root washing and other activities
- Drying the plant extends the shelf-life of the
product enabling it to be sold to different companies which then perform
their own extraction processes
- About five years needed from planting to
harvesting
- The cultivation costs are high, because the
field cultures have to be established by transplantation of seedlings, the
cultivation period from planting
to harvesting is five years long and the root harvest and post-harvest
processing are labour-intensive
- The demand for plant material of Rhodiola
rosea L. (Crassulaceae) for medicinal use has increased recently, amid
concerns about its quality and sustainability
- High hydrostatic pressure, was used as a new
extraction technique to obtain salidroside from Rhodiola sachalinensis.
- Extraction of r. rosea powder is done with
methanol
- Rhodiola rosea can be used in many forms:
fresh root, dried root, or extracts. It can be administered as an infusion
in tea, single ingredient supplement in capsules or directly in an energy
drink, bar or powder.
