Project Profile
- Cedar wood essential oil is
extracted from Juniperus virginiana of the Cupressaceae family. It is also
known as Virginian, red, eastern red or southern red cedar, as well as
Bedford cedar wood.
- The tree is native to North
America and grows up to 30 meters (100 feet) and ages up to 1,000 years.
This is the tree Solomon used to build the Temple in Jerusalem. Cedrus
libani or Lebanon cedar, from which the first essential oil was extracted,
is very scarce due to over use.
- Cedar wood oils each have
characteristic woody odours which may change somewhat in the course of
drying out. The crude oils are often yellowish or even darker in colour and
some, such as Texas cedar wood oil, are quite viscous and deposit crystals
on standing.
- The oil harvested from J.
virginiana is known in the essential oils trade as Virginian cedar wood oil
or Cedar wood oil Virginiana and is recovered through the process of partial
pressure steam distillation of sawdust, wood shavings, old stumps and
chipped logs, materials which would otherwise be considered waste.
- The oil harvested from J. ashei
is known as Texas cedarwood oil. This oil has different uses and does not
compete with the Virginia cedar wood oil. The chemical composition of the
two oils is similar, but Texas cedar wood oil is used almost exclusively as
feedstock for the manufacture of chemical derivatives whereas Virginia cedar
wood oil is used primarily in fragrance formulas.
- Virginia cedar wood oil is
widely used in the fragrance industry in soaps, air fresheners, floor
polishes, and sanitation supplies. It is also used in deodorants,
insecticides, mothproof bags, and janitorial supplies. In addition, a large
percentage of this oil is used as a starting material for cedrol and cedryl
acetate.
- The therapeutic properties of
cedar wood oil are antiseborrhoeic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, tonic,
astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, insecticide, sedative and
fungicide.
- Cedar wood oil benefits the skin
by its sedating ability which relieves itching. Its astringent action is
great for acne, oily skin, as well as for hair and dandruff. It helps with
chest and urinary infections, acts as a general tonic and has a pronounced
effect on mucus membranes.
- It has a calming and soothing
effect on the mind and is of great help in conditions associated with
anxiety and nervous tension. It is also of value in cases of arthritis and
rheumatism.
- Excluding the People's Republic
of China, for which the magnitude of consumption of domestically produced
cedar wood oil is not known, the United States, Western Europe and Japan are
the major markets for the oil.
- The red cedar market ranges from
small operations with gross annual sales of less than $10,000 per year to
large firms with gross annual sales over $16 million.
- Based on a retail price of $50
per gallon, there is a potential for $520,200 to $ 1,106,062.50 (average of
$813,450) of value per year in oils. This wholesale market could provide
between $156,060 and $650,625 in base economic activity.
