- This is one of the sacred trees of
India. It is found throughout India. The plant is prized for its beautiful
foliage and flowers.
- Other Names: Ashoka Tree, Anganapriya, Asogam,
Asokada, Ashopalava, Asok, Asoka, Asoka Tree, Asupala, Gandapushpa, Kankelli,
Kenkalimara, Thawgabo, Vichitrah.
- Saraca asoca is small evergreen
tree having height up to 10 meters. It has blackish bark and reddish-brown
wood; Flowers are orange to scarlet color turning into deep red in color in
bunches and has a strong fragrance; Pods tapering at both ends, seeds 4-8
ellipsoid- oblong.
- Recent analysis of the dry powdered bark
showed the presence of a fair amount of tannin and probably an organic
substance containing iron.
- The bark of the herb is strongly astringent
and uterine sedative. It acts directly on the muscular fibers of the uterus.
- It has a stimulating effect on the endometrium
and the ovarian tissue.
- Used for the uterine/ovarian fibroids,
menorrhagia, bleeding hemorrhoids, bleeding dysentery.
- Found in the foothills of
central and eastern Himalayas, almost all over the northern plains of India
as well as on the west coast of Bombay, its flowering season is around April
and May.
