Project at a Glance
  • Dill oil is the oil extracted from the seeds or leaves/stems (Dill weed) of the Dill plant. It can be used with water to create Dill Water.
  • Also known as Indian Dill, originally from Southwest Asia, Dill is an annual or biennial herb that grows up to 1 meter (3 feet). It has green feathery leaves and umbels of small yellow flowers, followed by tiny compressed seeds.
  • Dill Seed Oil is steam distilled from the crushed dried, mature fruit of Anethum graveolens. Freshly harvested from the field, dill weed is chopped into a fine hay and steam passes through the dill weed to start the distillation process. It is cultivated in the USA, Hungary, Holland, Italy, England, Germany, India, and Pakistan.
  • Dill Seed Oil is pale yellow or almost colorless (when fresh) and very mobile. Its odor is light and fresh, warm-spicy and reminiscent of caraway and spearmint, although less sharp. The taste is warm, slightly burning, but pleasant and powerfully aromatic-sweet.
  • Gripe water is often made of the fresh herb and given to babies and children for colic, or other digestive disorders, but dill oil is not used for this purpose, as it is too strong.
  • Dill is used as a condiment and flavoring and as a pickling spice. It is used to season foods, particularly in eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The entire plant is aromatic, and the small stems and immature umbels are used for flavoring soups, salads, sauces, fish, sandwich fillings, and particularly pickles.
  • India is the major dill seed supplier to the United States.Dill seed oil isn't used extensively in Canada or the United States. The essential oil trade requires a carvone content of at least 32 per cent.
  • The demand for essential oil of fragrance industry is 60%, flavor industry 20% and pharmaceutical industry 20% .
  • There is good demand from USA, UK, France, Germany and also far eastern countries like Japan, Singapore and Hongkong.
  • The growth rates normally are  9% and 25% for domestic and export market respectively. The demand supply gap is about 8000 tonnes.
