Project Information- The Pomegranate, Punica
granatum, is a species of fruit -
bearing deciduous shrub or small tree growing to 5-8 m tall.
- The genus Punica only has two species: P.
granatum L. and P.
Nana L., the former mainly
cultivated for its fruit and occasionally as an ornamental tree, and the
latter only ornamentally as its fruits are inedible.
- The origin of the pomegranate tree is the Mediterranean basin and the
Middle East.
- The fruit is a fleshy berry denominated balausta, thick-skinned,
complex, enclosed by the thallus, with various polyspermal cavities
separated by tenuous membranous partitions.
- Pomegranates are a great source of natural antioxidants, which can play
a big part in keeping your cardiovascular system pumping efficiently.
- Pomegranates are high in polyphenols. The most abundant polyphenols in
pomegranate are hydrolysable tannins, particularly punicalagins.
- The bark of the pomegranate tree may be used as a very strong laxans
(purgative), but it has several serious side-effects.
-
One medium apple-sized pomegranate provides about 105
calories.
-
It has 26 grams carbohydrate, is a good source of potassium
has some vitamin C (9 milligrams) and fiber (0.9 grams) as well as small
amounts of several other vitamins and minerals.
-
The EU, mostly the UK, is the main market for fresh
separated pomegranate arils at the price of 10& per Kg.
- Juice prices are very high since it is a gourmet product at the lowest
level of US$ 5 per litter.
