- The Eucalyptus plant botanical name is eucalyptus globulus, a tall
evergreen tree native to Australia and Tasmania.
- The genus contains about 300 species and is one of the most
characteristic genera of the Australian flora.
- Eucalyptus leaves hold some proportion of
fuel load in bushfires.
- The leaves and their preparations have been successfully used as a tonic
and gently stimulating stomachic, in atonic dyspepsia, and in catarrh of the
stomach and typhoid fever.
- The essential Oil of Eucalyptus used in medicine is obtained by aqueous
distillation of the fresh leaves.

Eucalyptus oil has been produced and traded for over 140
years in Australia.

Internally, Eucalyptus appears to help relieve symptoms of
colds, flu, chest congestion, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, and
respiratory infections.
- In India, considerable plantations of E.
globulus were made in 1863 in
the Nilgiris at Ootacamund.

World market price for the standard grade E. globulus oil is
now about US$3.50/kg in container lots (15 t).
- Globally, the European Community is the largest importer of eucalyptus
oils
