- Desiccated coconut (DC) is the white (dried, particulated or shredded)
product manufactured from fresh peeled coconut kernels
- Desiccated coconut is widely used in the preparation of sweets,
confectionery, curry preparation etc
- The main concentration of units producing desiccated coconut are in
Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Maharashtra.
- Deshelled coconuts are broken into pieces, washed properly and
disintegrated into powders of various
grades. The powder is then dried in a drier by spreading it out uniformly in
trays.
- Energy conservation & Pollution Control are important aspects to be
taken care of
- Waste water with acceptable biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and Chemical
Oxygen Demand (COD) values to be obtained
- Restaurants, dhabas, canteens, sweet, farsan and chikki manufacturers,
certain food processing units and caterers are bulk and regular consumers
- In global terms the major consumers for dessicated coconut are UK, West
Germany, France, Netherlands, USA and Australia, while the largest producers
are Philippines and Sri Lanka.
