Coconut Water

  • Coconut water is the liquid endosperm inside young coconuts. As the coconut matures this liquid largely becomes absorbed into the flesh found in mature coconuts. Coconut water has long been a popular drink in the tropics.
  • Coconut water can be found in regular cans or tetra paks, and is also marketed as a sports drink because of its high potassium and mineral content which helps the body recover from rigorous exercise.
  • Due to its sterility, pH, mineral, and sugar content, coconut water had been successfully used as liquid in intravenous therapy in emergency situations. It can also be used as intravenous fluid resuscitation of patients with dehydration or hypovolemia, because it is isotonic and sterile.
  • Tender coconut water contains most of the minerals such as potassium, sodium, calcium, phosphorous, iron, copper, sulphur and chlorides. Among the minerals more than half is potassium the concentration of which is markedly influenced by potash manuring. Tender coconut water being rich in potassium and other minerals plays a major role to increase the urinary output.
  • The processing and packing of tender coconut water with a capacity of 10,000 tender nuts per day involves an investment ranging from Rs.35-40 lakhs covering plant and machinery and margin money for working capital with a direct employment potential of 30 personnel.
  • Most coconut water is still consumed fresh in tropical coastal areas - once exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics, and begins to ferment. But the production of coconut beverages, particularly as a byproduct of processing operations such as coconut cream processing and coconut dessication, has long interested food manufacturers.
  • Coconut water is lauded for its low calorie and high nutritional content – characteristics that have made it increasingly sort after for the world's booming sports drink sector. Its high salt, sugar and vitamin content are said to make the ideal means for athletes to rehydrate, while providing a boost to nutritional requirements.
