- Tapioca is a starch extracted from the
root of plant species Manihot esculenta.
- Tapioca is now cultivated worldwide and
has many names, including cassava, bitter-cassava, manioc, "mandioca", "aipim",
"macaxeira", "manioca", "boba", "tapioca plant" "yuca".
- Cassava starch is produced primarily by
the wet milling of fresh cassava roots but in some countries such as
Thailand it is produced from dry cassava chips. Starch is the main
constituent of cassava. About 25% starch may be obtained from mature, good
quality tubers.
- Ethanol(Alcohol) is usually made by the
fermentation of sugar, cellulose, or converted starch. Ethanol can be
produced from maize, cassava, and cellulose. It has uses as food and in the
pharmaceutical industry. It is also used as a bio fuel.
- A basic ethanol plant that produces
ethanol from cassava will wash, peel, grate, and cook the cassava in a jet
cooker. It will then ferment, distill, and bottle the ethanol. Besides these
equipment a steam boiler, generating set, effluent treatment plant, and an
electrical system are needed.
- Poor subsistence farmers are the main
growers of cassava, and women are largely responsible for the
work of processing it to make tapioca and other products The uses of
cassava are expanding, as further processing can produce chips, pellets,
flour, alcohol and starch.
- In Africa cassava production has more
than tripled since 1961 from 33 million tonnes per year to
101 million tonnes.
